Setting goals is an important part of achieving success in all aspects of your life. It doesn’t matter if your goal is career advancement or running a marathon, you can achieve anything with the right mindset and a plan. People that have the ability to achieve their goals share a common set of traits that makes them successful. By taking on these traits you can achieve your goals!
1. Have clear goals and revise them regularly. Be sure that your goal is clearly defined. Your goal should not be vague but should include specific details such as “I would like to become a Senior Partner at my law firm by the time I am 35.” Make a plan about how you intend to accomplish your goal and be sure to revise this plan on a regular basis.
2. Set your MIT (most important tasks) first thing in the morning. Start each morning by prioritizing your to do list. Set the Most Important Tasks for the day and complete these first.
3. Dedicate 2 hours every day to your goal. You have made a commitment to yourself and now you need to put in the work to make your goal a reality. Spend 2 hours every day working on your goal and you will reap the rewards of your hard work and dedication.
4. Use the Pareto Principle. The Pareto Principle is simple to understand. It states that 80% of your results/output comes from 20% of your effort/input. Make all your effort count. If you can only devote 2 hours a day to your goal, then make sure those 2 hours are productive.
5. Have an emotional motivation, a purpose! If you have an emotional motivation you will have a higher rate of success. To achieve your goal, you need to know what truly motivates you and why you want to achieve your goal. If your goal is to earn a promotion at work to make more money, what is your emotional involvement? Do you want to earn more money so that you can retire with your spouse at early age or so that your kids can go to college?
6. Cultivate a positive self-image and be proud of yourself. Confidence and positive self-image are two major components in your ability to achieve your goal. You have to believe in your self and your ability to make the goal happen. Do whatever it takes to cultivate a positive self-image. Get plenty of rest, go to the spa, meditate, join a gym, use affirmations, read more, just do what it takes to feel good about you. Be proud of your accomplishments and know that you can achieve anything.
7. Do what you love! Enjoy what you do. If you truly love what you do, you will feel positive about it and be willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve your goal. Do everything to achieve your goal with determination and passion.
